FIGURE 6.3 Average number of political activities, by gender, LGBTQ status, and concern about climate change. Generation Z women and LGBTQ people who identify climate change as a critical issue engage in more political activities than Generation Z men or straight people. Qualtrics survey conducted by the author in May 2022, with a sample of 1,600 Americans aged eighteen to twenty-four.
When attitudes about the salience of climate change were added to my larger 2022 Gen Z political engagement model, they continued to have an impact on the political decisions of Gen Z women in a positive direction (see the appendix, see Tables A.31 and A.32, for more details). If we control for other factors, we see that identifying climate change as a critical issue led Gen Z women to engage in .621 more political activities that Gen Z women who did not. The impact of climate change attitudes was even higher for LGBTQ Zoomers, who engaged in .737 more activities than LGBTQ Zoomers who do not identify climate change as being as personally salient. For Gen Z men, attitudes about the saliency of climate change were not significantly related to their levels of political engagement, at least as found in my May 2022 survey.
In 2019, I found that identifying climate change as a critical issue in my model was also statistically linked to higher levels of engagement among Gen Z women, LGBTQ Zoomers, and straight Zoomers (see the appendix). Yet climate change also drove more political engagement among Gen Z men that year. While itâs hard to speculate why climate change failed to result in more engagement among Gen Z men in 2022 compared with 2019, it does serve as a reminder that deep concern for the planet has the potential to galvanize young people to become more involved in the political process.
